I am so excited to share that we’ve purchased our first bees! In April, we’ll be bringing home a pair of Nucs (pronounced nuke, as in “nucleus hive”). A nuc is basically a starter hive, with 5 frames that include a queen, workers, brood and honey already started for the coming season. A nuc has a bit of a head start over package bees.
Initially, we were considering Flow Hives, but after some careful consideration, we’ve decided to do what’s generally accepted as better for the bees rather than what’s easier for ourselves. Plus, it’s a whoooole lot cheaper to go with a pair of good ol’ Langstroth hives, than it is to start out with a pair of $700 Flow Hives. Maybe after we have a successful year or two with our bees, then we’ll see about trying out some of those new fangled hive ideas. 🙂
Until our bees come in April, we’ve got A LOT of research ahead of us.
